Head Groundsman/Groundsperson

Colchester United are looking for an experienced Head Groundsman to be part of its Maintenance team. The Head Groundsman will report to the Maintenance Team Manager and supervise the Deputy Groundsman and Grounds staff with their daily work activities to ensure that all sites are maintained in good condition for Club use, liaising with all departments over the use of grounds and pitches.

Main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Undertaking routine grounds maintenance work on sports playing fields across all sites operated by Colchester United on both natural and artificial surfaces
  • The safe use & operation of equipment & machinery used in grounds maintenance
  • Carry out minor repairs to the facilities, outbuildings & surrounding areas as and when required
  • Work with the Maintenance Team Manager in operating within the grounds budget, order materials and equipment as needed within the budget
  • Equipment maintenance and upkeep
  • Management of all grounds staff and casual ground staff as required
  • Mentoring of apprentices

Relevant qualifications & experience to do the job competently:

  • At least NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf Management or equivalent, or demonstrable level of experience in sports turf management
  • Knowledge of modern sports turf processes and innovations
  • Understanding of what is required to prepare and maintain first-class pitches
  • Appreciation and understanding of agronomic principals in turf
  • Suitable experience working as a Grounds person in a similar sporting environment
  • Experience in supervising a small team
  • PA1/PA2 & PA6 is desirable
  • Travel across multiple sites throughout the working day requires a full driving licence

The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is motivated to manage a small team to get the job done.

Salary: £28k
